TOPIC 6: Taking Lecture Notes

Hi assalamualaikum everyone! 😊

On July 12 2017, I learned a new topic entitled Taking Notes from Madam Normala Binti Ismail. It was a joyful and interesting lecture made by her. Everyone in the class was giving full attention as this is one of the important topic in our syllabus. I was delighted listening to her lecture because she knew how to attract us by showing funny actions in front of the class 😄😆

Two main points that she highlighted in this topic are:

  • Taking lecture notes
  • Effective note taking system

As a student, it is safe to say that sometimes we wonder why do we have to take lecture notes am I right? And the questions grow to how to take it? and what to include in the notes? Madam Normala explained to us in details and gave us some guidance in order to be the best in taking notes.

Why do we need to take lecture notes?
  1. To become an active listener in class. By taking notes, we tend to focus more and will have a better understanding about a subject.
  2. Accurate record of information. If we take lecture note, we will able to gain accurate information from the lecturer. This can avoid misleading and misunderstanding information.
  3. To interpret, condense and organize information easily. From the notes, we will be able to edit and organize the information properly and can prioritize which is important.
  4. For repetition of material. As a student, we can easily do revision based from the note we have taken. 😁👌

How to take notes?

First thing first, you have to prepare mentally and physically before class starts and become an active listener. Apart from that, we are advise to use acronyms to make it short and faster. Those are the ways on how to take note effectively in class. 👇

The Cornell Note taking method
The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes. The student divides the paper into two columns: the note-taking column (usually on the right) is twice the size of the questions/key word column (on the left). The student should leave five to seven lines, or about two in (5 cm), at the bottom of the page.
